In the 2016-2017 school year, approximately 1.7 million students were homeschooled, representing 3.3% of the school-age population. This is a significant increase from the 1999-2000 school year, when only 850,000 students were homeschooled. 2022 statistics suggest 3.1 million students were being homeschooled, which is about 6% of the school age population.

Then in 2021/22, it barely dropped to 4,520, still solidly 2.1 percent of kids, and preserving a 63 percent increase from pre-Covid.

Children who are homeschooled are more dependent on their parents for facilitating their social lives than other children. While a child who attends school may see their friends at school, a child who is homeschooled will often only see their friends when their parents arrange a playdate or other get-together, or enroll them in a homeschool co-op.
