27 de jun. de 2023 · Garth Family. Thomas Garth (c. 1740-1812) was the first of the Garth family to settle in Albemarle County, Virginia in 1762. A contemporary of Thomas Jefferson, the two men shared several business connections. By the time Thomas Garth Sr. died in 1812, the Garth family had assembled a large amount of land and wealth within the county.
In the C10th Tarring was given by King Athelstan of England to the archbishops of Canterbury and listed in the Domesday book in 1086 as terringes. It is believed to have been visited by Thomas A’Becket, the martyred archbishop, in the 12th century as well as by St Richard of Chichester, patron saint of Sussex, in the 13th century.

Thomas Garth According to some publications, Thomas Garth was born in 1740 in Surrey, England, the eldest son of John Garth, of Louisa County, Virginia. However, John, was already in Virginia by 1733. Thomas married Judith Bocock, daughter of Salem Bobcock and Susannah Bow (e) of Louisa County, Virginia, about 1761.

He was the son of John Garth (17011764), Recorder and MP for Devizes, and Rebecca, daughter of John Brompton and granddaughter of Sir Richard Raynsford, Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench.
