During 1967, the Shames laid down the tracks for their second LP A Scratch in the Sky. It proved to be a huge leap in quality (if not, alas, in sales). Gone, for the most part, were the covers. What remained was a fine resume of the writing talents of members Jim Fairs and Lenny Kerley, who wrote nine of the 11 tracks on the album.
The Cryan’ Shames’ second album proved to be more successful, charting at #156. The band experimented with a combination of psychedelic rock and studio arrangements. In 1968, several of the band’s key members quit the band, most notably, James Faire. Despite this, the group formed a new lineup and released their final album, Synthesis.
And a second album, entitled A Scratch in the Sky, issued in December of that year, actually sold somewhat better than their debut LP, reaching number 158 nationally; in contrast to the mix of garage punk, British Invasion, and folk-rock sounds on Sugar & Spice, A Scratch in the Sky was an ornate sunshine pop/psychedelic work, reminiscent of the Association or, perhaps, the Left Banke.

For me, one of those occasions came with Chicago garage band The Cryan’ Shames’ recording of the old Drifters hit “Up On the Roof,” off their incomprehensibly under-appreciated psychedelic classic A Scratch In the Sky.
Professional ratings. Sugar and Spice is the 1966 debut album by The Cryan' Shames, originally released in mono (CL 2589) and in stereo (CS 9389). The cover photography was done by Don Bronstein. The album was recorded in two days (August 25 and 26, 1966). The liner photography was done by Rich Dienethal of River Grove, Illinois.
