  1. During 1967, the Shames laid down the tracks for their second LP A Scratch in the Sky. It proved to be a huge leap in quality (if not, alas, in sales). Gone, for the most part, were the covers. What remained was a fine resume of the writing talents of members Jim Fairs and Lenny Kerley, who wrote nine of the 11 tracks on the album.

For me, one of those occasions came with Chicago garage band The CryanShames’ recording of the old Drifters hit “Up On the Roof,” off their incomprehensibly under-appreciated psychedelic classic A Scratch In the Sky.

  6. Professional ratings. Sugar and Spice is the 1966 debut album by The Cryan' Shames, originally released in mono (CL 2589) and in stereo (CS 9389). The cover photography was done by Don Bronstein. The album was recorded in two days (August 25 and 26, 1966). The liner photography was done by Rich Dienethal of River Grove, Illinois.
