David Lyulph Gore Wolseley Ogilvy was born on 18 July 1893 in Cahir, Tipperary. He was the eldest son of David Ogilvy, 11th Earl of Airlie and Lady Mabell Gore. He was 6 years old when he inherited the title in 1900 after his father was killed in the Boer War. He was commissioned on 4 Sep 1912 and reached the rank of captain in WW1.

Airlie was born David George Coke Patrick Ogilvy in Westminster on 17 May 1926. He was the eldest son of the 12th Earl of Airlie and his wife Lady Alexandra Marie Bridget Coke (1891–1984), herself the daughter of 3rd Earl of Leicester.

As a senior member of the royal household, he was a guest at the 1947 wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
