Charles Michael, Duke of Mecklenburg (German: Carl Michael Herzog zu Mecklenburg; 17 June [O.S. 5 June] 1863 – 6 December 1934) was an officer in the Imperial Russian Army, heir presumptive to the throne of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and from 1918 head of the Grand Ducal House.
There was also a morganatic male-line relative, Duke Charles Michael's nephew George, Count of Carlow. Because Charles Michael was in Russia, Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV of Mecklenburg-Schwerin became regent for Mecklenburg-Strelitz and remained such until the end of the German monarchies in 1918, when the government in Strelitz declared the end of the regency. He was born in Oranienbaum, Russia, a grandson of Grand Duke Georg of Mecklenburg-Strelitz via his second son Duke Georg August of Mecklenburg (1824–1876) and his wife Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna of Russia, a granddaughter of Emperor Paul I of Russia. Charles Michael studied at the University of Strasbourg and gained a PhD.
The cavalry regiment he became colonel of was also named “Duke of Mecklenburg” after him. On completing his posting in Portugal Carl arrived back in Britain aboard HMS Venus in January 1763. Having impressed his brother in law King George III with his service in Portugal, a month after his return Carl was promoted from a Major General to a Lieutenant General in the Hanoverian service.
