Accounts of her place and date of birth vary, some sources placing it between 1720-1725 in Barrowfield in Scotland, others in Rome, Italy. Her father was a staunch supporter of the Jacobite cause, having supported the Stuarts previously in the 1715 uprising and having helped to bring his affianced wife to James III/VIII in 1719.

  2. John Walkinshaw, 3rd of Barrowfield (c.1671 – 1731) was a member of the Lowland Scottish gentry and the father of Clementina Walkinshaw, the mistress of Prince Charles Edward Stuart, who in 1745 attempted to regain the throne of Scotland on behalf of his father.

She was the youngest daughter of John Walkinshaw of Barrowhill (1671 - 1731) and his wife Katherine Paterson. Clementina was educated on the Continent, and later converted to Roman Catholicism.

It is said Clementina was named after Charles’ mother, was possibly her goddaughter and being born in Rome, may have known Charles from childhood – but this is supposition alone.
