Art became the expression of pure emotion. Jawlensky started painting large, powerful portraits. His Head of a Woman of 1911 is one of the most popular items in Gemeentemuseum Den Haag’s collection. The face is painted in red and blue and the woman’s yellow and green eyes suggest she is in a state of mental turbulence.
Alexej von Jawlensky. An artist of Russian origin, Alexej von Jawlensky pursued most of his career in Germany, where he collaborated closely with his compatriot Wassily Kandinsky and other German artists. He moved to Munich in 1896 to further his training there, disappointed with the teaching methods at the Saint Petersburg Academy.
