A painting in the National Portrait Gallery offers a grey-white face, long, guarded, medieval, remote: ‘unknown woman, formerly known as Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury’. It is painted on a dateable oak panel, and the dates suit the presumed subject, but the artist is anonymous.
Margaret Pole, grevinde af Salisbury (14. august 1473 – 27. maj 1541), var en engelsk adelskvinde. Hun var datter af Georg, hertug af Clarence, og Isabel Neville, niece til kongerne Edvard 4. og Richard 3. Margaret var en af to kvinder i England i 1500-tallets, der holdt en titel i sin egen ret uden at ægtemanden holdt titlen.

Blessed Margaret Pole. On the 29th December 1886, Pope Leo XIII beatified Margaret, making her Blessed Margaret Pole, a Catholic martyr. Her feast day is the 28th May, the date that some sources give as her execution date. These are the words found on the wall of her cell and thought to have been etched there by Margaret:-.
