In 1963, George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland, his distant cousin "Geordie", died, leaving no immediate male heir. Egerton succeeded to the dukedom, but did not inherit the Sutherland estates or Dunrobin Castle , which went to Elizabeth Janson , Geordie's niece, who became the Countess of Sutherland .
George Granville Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 5th Duke of Sutherland, KT, PC, was the eldest son of Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland, and his wife, Lady Millicent St Clair-Erskine, daughter of Robert St Clair-Erskine, 4th Earl of Rosslyn.

The 5th Duke died without issue in 1963 and was succeeded by John Sutherland Egerton, oldest son of the 4th Earl of Ellesmere. Millicent, Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, died in August 1955. On the death of the 4th Duke in 1913, she had remarried, and married again after a divorce. During the First World War she served as a nurse in Namur.
