He was born Prince Nikolaus Friedrich Peter on July 8, 1827, in Oldenburg, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, now in the German state of Lower Saxony, the only child of Grand Duke August I of Oldenburg and his second wife, Princess Ida of Anhalt-Bernburg-Schaumburg-Hoym .
Peter II (German: Nikolaus Friedrich Peter) (8 July 1827 – 13 June 1900) was the reigning Grand Duke of Oldenburg from 1853 to 1900. He claimed hereditary parts of Duchy of Holstein after the Second Schleswig War in 1864.

His maternal grandparents are Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and Princess Bathildis of Schaumburg-Lippe. His grandfather was overthrown as Grand Duke of Oldenburg in 1918, at the end of World War I.
