Being decades since the titular novel and Chasm City (2001), Redemption Ark (2002) and Absolution Gap (2003), my grasp of the details was understandably a bit fuzzy.

No, these aren't superlatives for the latest must-have infomercial gadget; they're adjectives that describe Absolution Gap, the third and final book in Welsh author Alastair Reynold's Revelation Space trilogy (Revelation Space and Redemption Ark). Humankind is valiantly fighting extinction.
Out of the 3 'Redemption Arc' would sit with me as the best, Revelation Space filling in the number 2 slot and 'Absolution Gap' coming in last, which is the point of this query. I came away suitably impressed by the detail and scope of the story, the world building of Hela and its characters but mildly disappointed at what felt like a pointless journey that was rushed in the epilogue.

The main trilogy (also known as the Inhibitor trilogy) consists of 1) Revelation Space, 2) Redemption Ark and 3) Absolution Gap, and deals with humanity coming to the attention of the inhibitors and the resultant war between them.
