The domestic servant Anna Maria Schwegelin, who gave this fountain its name, was allegedly the last witch on trial in Germany. According to old scripts she died in the Stockhaus. The fountain, located on the Residenzplatz, was dedicated to the Allgäu woman in 2002 in memory of her ordeal.
Anna Maria Schwegelin was one of the last people accused of witchcraft in Germany. She was born into poverty. Her parents were Michael Schwegelin & Anna Blanckin. Michael's brother, Andreas has a lot of known descendants. In 1770, Anna Maria quit her religion, Roman Catholic, so she could marry. She wanted to marry a Protestant man.
