Entre 1240 y 1243, Fernando estuvo en Castilla , como vasallo de Fernando III de Castilla y de su heredero, el infante Alfonso. Regresó a Portugal, donde ejerció poderes entre 1243 y 1245. Estando en Portugal, debió haber apoyado a su hermano, aunque procedía de Bolonia , en la guerra para reclamar el trono portugués, donde murió en 1246.
