Brief Life History of Donnchadh MacGilbert. Donnchadh MacGilbert 1st Earl of Carrick was born in 1174, in Carrick, Ayrshire, Scotland as the son of Gille Brigte Mac Fergus of Galloway. He married Avelina FitzAlan Countess of Carrick before 1200, in Scotland. They were the parents of at least 8 sons and 2 daughters.
Niall's earliest appearance in the sources occurs in 1282 on a witness list to a royal charter in favour of Cambuskenneth Abbey. Niall disappears for 20 years, unless the "Master Niall" active in the service of the then Earl of Carrick, Robert, in the 1290s can be identified with Niall mac Cailein.
Donnchadh's probable grandson, Niall, was earl for only six years and died leaving no son but four daughters, one of whom is known by name. The last, presumably the eldest, was his successor Marjorie , who married in turn Adam of Kilconquhar (died 1271), a member of the Mac Duibh family of Fife, and Robert de Brus, 6th Lord of Annandale .
