18 de sept. de 2023 · Henry was the eldest son of Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk and King Henry VIII's good friend, and Catherine Willoughby, daughter of William Willoughby, 11th Baron Willoughby de Eresby, and his second wife, María de Salinas. His father died in August 1545 and his wardship was granted to his mother.
Holbein uses this device, more commonly reserved for scholarly adults, to suggest the boy’s precocious intelligence. Charles Brandon and his brother fulfilled their early promise and were already celebrated scholars by the time of their early deaths from the sweating sickness, within half an hour of each other, in 1551.

Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk, 1st Viscount Lisle, KG (c.1484 – 22 August 1545) was the son of Sir William Brandon and Elizabeth Bruyn. Through his third wife Mary Tudor he was brother-in-law to Henry VIII. His father was the standard-bearer of Henry Tudor, Earl of Richmond (later King Henry VII).
