Elizabeth was the elder of two daughters of Margrave John of Brandenburg-Küstrin (1513–1571) from his marriage to Catherine of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1518–1574), daughter of the Duke Henry V of Brunswick-Lüneburg . On 26 December 1558 Elisabeth married Margrave George Frederick I of Brandenburg-Ansbach-Kulmbach (1539–1603) in Küstrin.
Elisabeth Sophie was born to Frederick William I, Elector of Brandenburg and his second wife, Duchess Sophia Dorothea of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. Courland She married (29 April 1691) her cousin, Duke Frederick Casimir Kettler of Courland (1650–1698).

In Bayreuth on 10 December 1651, Georg Albrecht married firstly Marie Elisabeth (1628–1664), daughter of Philip, Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg. They had six children: Christian Philip (b. Bayreuth, 29 May 1653 – d. Bayreuth, 8 August 1653). Sophie Amalie (b. Bayreuth, 20 June 1655 – d. Bayreuth, 20 February 1656).
Born in Ansbach, Albert was the second son of Joachim Ernst, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach (1582–1625) and his wife Sophie (1594–1651), daughter of John George, Count of Solms-Laubach.
