Eastern Illinois University was established in 1895 as the Eastern Illinois State Normal School, with the primary purpose of training teachers for schools in East Central Illinois. The first building on the campus, Old Main, was completed in 1899 and is formally named the Livingston C. Lord Administration Building in honor of the university's first president.

EIU will no longer require SAT or ACT test scores for admission to the University. Applicants who do not submit test scores, but have a 2.8 high school GPA and college prep work will meet admissions criteria. Those with no test scores and a 2.5 to 2.79 GPA will have their credentials reviewed to determine eligibility for admission.
