As timely as when it was first published in 1947, one need only open today's newspaper to see the same issues passionately being discussed between blacks & whites that we find in Kingsblood Royal, says Charles Johnson. Perhaps only now can we fully appreciate Sinclair Lewis's astonishing achievement.
This is Sinclair Lewis's most controversial book and his most explicit confrontation of race. Though popular at the time of publication, it was quickly expunged from the American literary radar and has since been out of print. It is as timely now as when first published. Kingsblood Royal is available only from the Modern Library.

Kingsblood Royal told the story of a white banker who overcomes his Rotarian destiny by embracing the newly discovered 1/32 Negro within him.

In this novel, the protagonist, Neil Kingsblood, had been told by his father that they were descended from royalty. Neil had been researching his family history and had discovered that he was a direct descendant of a Black fur trapper from the 18th century.
