Night of the Comet is pure atmosphere. The orange skies and desolate streets, the upbeat 80s tunes, the bright neon colours, movie theatre and arcade games, department stores and dramatic fashion. Gnarly radioactive zombies hiding around every corner and our two charming leads having as much fun as they possibly can in a newly post apocalyptic world.
Night of the Comet is not really symbolic of anything quite so real world perilous, but it serves as a rare example of smart, resourceful and snarky butt-kicking women in film of that decade.
Night of the Comet double-billed with Schwarzenegger's unexpected early blockbuster, The Terminator, at drive-ins that year, garnering the better reviews of the two films. However, the hoped-for blockbuster, 1984, had to be released before the year was out, and this caused Night of the Comet to get bumped early at many theatres, despite its grossing many multiples of its modest production cost.

They end up spending the night in a steel-lined room just as a comet passes close to the earth, vaporizing the people in its wake.
