In het begin van zijn carrière ontwikkelde hij zich tot karakteracteur, die voornamelijk slechteriken speelde. He will probably be most remembered for roles in war films such as The Glory Brigade (1953), Attack (1956), The Dirty Dozen ( 1967), Hell in the Pacific and Sergeant Ryker (both 1968) and The Big Red One (1980).
