United States naval officer and hydrographer Matthew Fontaine Maury was one of the founders of oceanography. He also headed Confederate coast and harbor defenses during the American Civil War. Maury was born on January 14, 1806, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia. He entered the navy in 1825 and sailed around the world (1826–30).

His family moved to Williamson County, Tennessee, when he was five. Maury attended Harpeth Academy in Franklin and studied under Gideon Blackburn and James Otey, the first Episcopal Bishop of Tennessee.
