Biografia. Primo figlio del quattro volte primo ministro William Ewart Gladstone e fratello di Henry Neville e Herbert John, fu membro del parlamento per vent'anni, nelle file del Liberal Party: dal 1865 al 1868 fu il rappresentante della circoscrizione di Chester, dal 1868 al 1880 di Whitby, dal 1880 al 1885 dell'East Worcestershire.

His son, William Henry Gladstone, who had been High Sheriff of Flintshire for 1888 died in 1891 and it then passed to his son William Glynne Charles Gladstone. He was later killed in the First World War. The estate was subsequently purchased by his uncle Henry Gladstone, 1st Baron Gladstone of Hawarden.

One of his other sons, William Henry Gladstone, was also elected as an MP. Queen Victoria asked Spencer Compton Cavendish, to form a ministry, but he persuaded her to send for Gladstone. Gladstone's second administration—both as prime minister and again as chancellor of the exchequer until 1882—lasted from June 1880 to June 1885.
