Canning se retire en 1809 après un duel avec lord Robert Stewart Castlereagh, son collègue au gouvernement. Il sera cependant encore ambassadeur au Portugal en 1814 , puis à nouveau ministre des Affaires étrangères du Royaume-Uni de 1822 à 1827, après le suicide de Castlereagh.
