A young Boston historian, Stephen Fox, has written the first comprehensive history of the American conservation social movement grounded in an analytical framework. In this essay I intend to review and make some critical comments on Fox's book and to extend his interpretation of the ecology move ment. Fox offers the reader three books in one.
