  4. Balthasar Gérard (c. 1557 – 14 July 1584) was a French assassin who killed William the Silent, the leader of the Dutch revolt, in Delft on 10 July 1584. Gérard was a devout Catholic and an admirer of King Philip II of Spain, who had offered a reward of 25,000 crowns, peerage, and an estate to anyone who killed William.
