Ippolito’s successors enriched the villa with new fountains, including one by the famous Baroque sculptor, Gianlorenzo Bernini. It eventually passed into the Hapsburgs’ greedy hands. After the peace treaty of WWI, Villa d’Este became the property of the Italian state.
