Described as a marvel of the world (stupor mundi) in his own day, for a brief moment Frederick managed to forge an empire that rivalled that of Charlemagne, encompassing the kingdoms of Germany, Burgundy, Lombardy, and Sicily, as well as Jerusalem.
This second volume completes the history of Friedrich II (1194-1250) and focuses on his thirty year reign as Emperor of Germany and Sicily. Stuerner examines Friedrich's central role in the Crusades, his reformation of Sicily, his political and diplomatic skills and his confrontations with the Lombards and the papacy.
