  3. He was their fourth child and would succeed to the throne as James V. Margaret's sixth child, Alexander, duke of Ross (1514–1515), was born after James IV's death at Flodden Field. Too many pregnancies, following in too quick a succession, together with the cold, draughty, unsanitary conditions prevailing in 16th-century Scottish castles were probably responsible for the high infant mortality.
