John III of Auvergne (1467 – 28 March 1501), Count of Auvergne, was the son of Bertrand VI of Auvergne and Louise de la Trémoille (1432 – 10 April 1474), Dame de Boussac, the daughter of Georges de la Trémoille. He was the last in the line of Counts of Auvergne and Boulogne from the La Tour d'Auvergne family. Family and children
John I (died on 24 March 1386) was a member of the House of Auvergne who reigned as Count of Auvergne and Count of Boulogne from 1361 until his death. He was the eldest son of Robert VII, Count of Auvergne and Boulogne, by his second wife, Marie of the House of Dampierre .
Auvergne was integrated in turn into the appanages of Alphonse, count of Poitou and Toulouse (1241–1271) and of John, duke of Berry and Auvergne and count of Poitiers and Montpensier (1360–1416). During the Hundred Years' War Auvergne faced numerous raids and revolts, including the Tuchin Revolt .
On 8 July 1505 the young Albany married his first cousin Anne, Countess of Auvergne and Lauraguais (eldest daughter and heiress of Albany's maternal uncle John III, Count of Auvergne who had died in 1501). Thus John started to enjoy the position and rights of Count of Auvergne and Lauraguais in France, until Anne's death in 1524.

John II died the same year as his second and last known son. Jeanne remained a widow for seven years. On 11 January 1495, Jeanne married her second husband John III, Count of Auvergne. [1] They had: Anne, [3] married John Stewart, 2nd Duke of Albany. Madeleine, married Lorenzo II, Duke of Urbino. [1] She was the mother of Catherine de' Medici.
