Ilkhanate. The Ilkhanate, also spelled Il-khanate was a khanate established from the southwestern sector of the Mongol Empire. The Ilkhanid realm was ruled by the Mongol House of Hulagu. Hulagu Khan, the son of Tolui and grandson of Genghis Khan, inherited the Middle Eastern part of the Mongol Empire after his brother Möngke Khan died in 1260.

Lo que vino después fue la formación en Oriente Medio de un imperio mongol más pequeño liderado por Hulagu y de nombre Ilkanato. Duró poco, se derrumbó a principios del siglo XIV. Hulagu Khan had to balance several conflicts once civil war broke out after the death of Mongke Khan in 1259. The most serious threat was war with the Golden Horde, led by Batu’s younger brother Berke. A convert to Islam, Berke had become deeply disturbed by Hulagu’s destruction of Baghdad and the murder of the caliph.
