Carl Ritter’s story began on August 7, 1779, in the quaint German town of Quedlinburg. From an early age, it was evident that he possessed an insatiable curiosity about the world around him. Growing up in a time of immense scientific and intellectual progress, Ritter found himself captivated by the works of influential thinkers such as Alexander von Humboldt and Immanuel Kant.
A NOTE ON CARL RITTER, 1779-1859. AA CENTURY ago two "giants" of geography died in the same year. They left their impress strongly on succeeding generations. It is of historical interest to look back at their lives and works at this time, but to do so at any time leads to a better understanding of the heritage we have received from them.
