Marc Chagall was a Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. An early modernist, he was associated with several major artistic styles and created works in a wide range of artistic formats, including painting, drawings, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints.
In 1962, Malraux commissioned Chagall, his long-time friend, whom he considered to be “one of the greatest colorists of our time,” to create a ceiling for the Paris Opera to conceal the one completed by Lenepveu in 1871. Chagall, a known music lover who had already created sets for the ballets Aleko (1942) and The Firebird (1945), accepted.
