He fought in all of France’s wars of Louis XIV’s reign (1643–1715). Many of the fortifications Vauban built in France were collectively designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008.

Vauban doit alors se contenter des fortifications du département de Louvois, c’est-à-dire les fortifications terrestres. En 1673, avec la guerre de Hollande, l’ingénieur convainc Louis XIV de mettre en place son « pré carré » sur la frontière nord-est, en réduisant le nombre de ses places pour ne conserver que les plus fortes, créant ainsi une double ligne de villes fortifiées.
24 de mar. de 2022 · Vauban parcourt la France pour veiller à la construction de multiples citadelles, notamment dans le Sud et sur les côtes. Il est nommé lieutenant général en 1688. Il écrit Mémoire sur le "rappel des Huguenots" exhortant Louis XIV à revenir sur la révocation de l'édit de Nantes, au nom de la liberté de conscience.
