Ibn Battuta was an educated, cosmopolitan, gregarious, upper-class man who traveled within a familiar Muslim culture, meeting like-minded people wherever he went. Polo was a merchant, not formally educated, who traveled to strange, unfamiliar cultures, where he learned new ways of dressing, speaking, and behaving.
Ibn Battuta a dicté le récit de ses voyages, ou « Rihla », au secrétaire du sultan de Fès. Le manuscrit fut rédigé en trois mois et achevé en 1355. Ses récits de voyage sont souvent plus précis que ceux de Marco Polo, mais ils comportent aussi des passages comme la description d’êtres surnaturels, qui relèvent purement de l’imagination.
