You might have never heard of Ann Radcliffe, if you are not familiar with English literature, but her prose strongly influenced a literature style called ‘Gothic novel’, where the supernatural comes into play and all of today’s vampire, horror, and fantastic literature has originated from.
The Mysteries of Udolpho, novel by Ann Radcliffe, published in 1794.It is one of the most famous English Gothic novels.The work tells the story of the orphaned Emily St. Aubert, who is subjected to cruelties by her guardians, threatened with the loss of her fortune, and imprisoned in a number of castles but finally freed and united with her lover.
