Friedrich Hölderlin nació el 20 de marzo de 1770 en Lauffen am Neckar (Wurtemberg). Hijo del maestro de claustro Heinrich Friedrich Hölderlin y de Johanna Christiane Heyn (hija de un clérigo). Cursó estudios de teología en la Universidad de Tubinga donde conoció a Hegel y se interesó por la filosofía de Rousseau .
