According to Wikipedia: Esico of Ballenstedt (died around 1060)[1] is the progenitor of the House of Ascania, (i.e., the oldest known member of his dynasty). Die ersten bekannten Verleihungen von Orden in den askanischen Häusern gehen zurück bis ins Jahr 1382. Albrecht der Bär, Sohn von Otto dem Reichen, ist der Ur-Urenkel des Stammvaters der Askanier, Graf Esiko von Ballenstedt (verstorben um 1059). Albrecht war eine der berühmtesten historischen Persönlichkeiten des deutschen Mittelalters.
