Biography. Adelbert was born at Ballenstedt in Eastphalia, the son of Esiko, Count of Ballenstedt and his wife Mathilde, probably a daughter of Duke Herman II of Swabia. He married Matilde of Swabia (c. 995–1031), daughter of Herman II, Duke of Swabia, and sister-in-law of Conrad. They had three children: Sophia, countess of Bar and Pont-à-Mousson, married Louis, count of Montbéliard. Frederick, his successor.

Esico fu il conte di Ballenstedt dal 1036 circa al 1060, e i suoi possedimenti divennero il nucleo del successivo principato di Anhalt. (it) Esiko van Ballenstedt (ca. 995 - ca. 1060) is de eerste uit eigentijdse bronnen bekende vertegenwoordiger van het geslacht der Ascaniërs. Rond 1027 trouwde Esiko met Mathilde van Zwaben.
