Parinirvana, in scholarly discourse, refers to the death of the Buddha. By dogma I mean "views", of which early Buddhist is largely devoid, and the presence of which in a teacher signals lack of enlightenment according to the Buddha (including views of Self), but later Buddhist texts may be rife with them (if texts are taken literally), possibly including some Theravada literature.

The Nirvana ceremony, or in my Soto Zen tradition, called the Nehan ceremony takes place on February 15th and it commemorates the Buddha ’s passing and his final teachings.
