Prins Gustav Albrecht blev født den 28. februar 1907 i Berleburg i Tyskland som den ældste søn af prins Richard, 4. Fyrste af Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg ( 1882 - 1925) i hans ægteskab med prinsesse Madeleine af Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg. Hans far var fyrste af det mediatiserede tyske fyrstendømme Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg.
Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg war Mitgründer und langjähriger Präsident des World Wildlife Fund in Deutschland sowie Stifter eines Musik-Lehrstuhls an der Universität Tel Aviv [3] und von 1975 bis 1980 Präsident der Steuben-Schurz-Gesellschaft. Prinz zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg lebte seit 2004 bis zu seinem Tod in Hamburg-Eppendorf .
