Greenwich is a town with a long history. It became the site of a royal palace, the Palace of Placentia, from the 15th century. This was the birthplace of many members of the Tudor dynasty, including Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. The palace became ruined during the English Civil War. It was rebuilt as a hospital by Sir Christopher Wren.
From 1998 to 2002 the Greenwich Foundation for the Old Royal Naval College worked hard to revitalise the site and eventually open the whole college up as an educational institute to visitors. Today, the college is home to two exceptional museums: the National Maritime Museum and the Queen's House.

History. The Royal Naval College, Greenwich, was founded by an Order in Council dated 16 January 1873. The establishment of its officers consisted of a President, who was always a Flag Officer; a Captain, Royal Navy; a Director of Studies; and Professors of Mathematics, Physical Science, Chemistry, Applied Mechanics, and Fortification.
