The teenager fell victim to the religious upheaval of the times and to manipulation by ambitious nobles. Thanks to events beyond her control or desires, Jane rose from obscurity to the throne, but within months, went from the throne to her death on February 12th, 1554.

Although not historically accurate in many details – for example, the execution actually took place outdoors not inside, as shown here – the painting’s combination of intense melodrama and realism proved extremely popular with the public.

The account below was found in the anonymous Chronicle of Queen Jane and of Two Years of Queen Mary. The decision to execute her cousin was not easy for Queen Mary I.
