Calvin Coolidge became the 30th president of the United States in 1923, after the death of Warren G. Harding. He was elected president in 1924 and served until 1929. Although Coolidge was a fiscally conservative Republican who believed that the size and scope of the federal government should be limited, he held some progressive beliefs and supported women’s suffrage.

The SS President Coolidge was a luxury passenger steamship built by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport, Virginia, in 1931 for the Dollar Steamship Line. According to historical ship registries found on online database Wrecksite, Coolidge was 615 feet long and had a beam of 81 feet.

This ocean liner was operated by Dollar Steamship Lines until 1938 and then operated by American President Lines up until the year 1941. She was sucked by mines in Espiritu Santa, whilst serving as a troopship from December 1941 until October 1942.
