  3. Edward Charles Howard was born on 28 May 1774 at Dar-nell Hall near Sheffield. His father, Henry Howard (1713– 1787) was an unsuccessful wine merchant in Dublin. After his failure in business the 9th Duke of Norfolk, a kinsman, paid his debts and put him in charge of his Sheffield estates (Kurzer, 1999, 2000; Sears, 1976).
