Georges Lemaître died, age 71, of leukemia on June 20, 1966 in Leuven, Belgium, and was buried in the Marcinelle cemetery in his hometown of Charleroi. Shortly before his death, he learned of Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson’s discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation, providing strong evidence that the universe had indeed begun in a Big Bang.

He was the first person to propose the theory of the expansion of the Universe , widely misattributed to Edwin Hubble , and is best known for his proposal of what became known as the Big Bang theory of the origin of the Universe .
