Os THE GLADIATORS foram fundados em 1967 por Albert Griffiths, que escolheu o nome depois de ver o combate de gladiadores no filme Ben-Hur. A ideia de estes homens lutarem pela sua liberdade, à imagem da luta contra a Babilónia, atraiu imediatamente a comunidade Rasta e ainda. hoje está associada à luta contra a dureza da vida na Jamaica.

Die Geschichte der Gladiators beginnt 1965, zunächst mit Albert Griffiths, David Webber und Errol Grandison. 1969 ersetzte Clinton Fearon David Webber und 1973 verließ Errol Grandison die Gruppe und wurde durch Gallimore Sutherland abgelöst. Seither bestand das Trio also aus Albert Griffiths, Clinton Fearon und Gallimore Sutherland.
