Synopsis for "The Dark Knight Returns". It is a dark, depressing world where criminals run amok in the absence of superheroes. Gotham City is terrorized by a gang of vicious and aimless teenage murderers, the Mutants. A now 55-year-old Bruce Wayne has been retired for ten years following the death of the second Robin, Jason Todd.
The issue's story title, The Dark Knight Returns, has often been used as the comic series' title in subsequent reprints. The series has often been referred to as this title. The story notably features the importance of Martha Wayne 's pearl necklace , with prolonged imagery of it being damged in slow-motion with the pearls cattering about the bodies of the Waynes.
