The tower was built in 1600 by Patrick Stewart, 2nd Earl of Orkney, during his brief period as de facto ruler of Shetland.

In 1571 he appointed his half-brother Laurence Bruce of Cultmalindie foud of Shetland. Bruce was an even greater tyrant than Stewart, and was the subject of a mass complaint by the Shetlanders in 1577 .

Following the death of Patrick Stuart in November 2023, his wife is now styled Gillian Stuart, Dowager Countess Castle Stewart. Stuart succeeded his father as Earl Castle Stewart in 1961. [5] In 2013 Patrick lent his DNA to a University of Strathclyde study that confirmed his descent from Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland.
