His was the first architect’s collection to attempt to preserve the best in design for the architectural profession in the future, and it did so by assembling as exemplars surviving drawings by great Renaissance masters and by the leading architects in Britain in the 17th and 18th centuries and his near contemporaries such as Sir William Chambers, Robert Adam and George Dance the Younger.

  3. 29 de jul. de 2022 · Three mosaics have been found on the site – decorative floors that once adorned impressive Roman villas built on the bank of the now-lost River Walbrook. The first mosaic was discovered in the 1820s, when Sir John Soane was completing the north-west expansion of the Bank. It’s been in the Roman galleries at the British Museum ever since.

  6. A View of the Old Bank of England. In late 1700s, architect Robert Taylor (1714–1788) added two wings to the Threadneedle Street building. The first wing was added to the east of the central block in the 1760s. The second wing was added to the west of the central block in the 1780s. You can see both in this painting by Thomas Shepherd.
