Winston Churchill, age 22, as he reflected on his experience as a member of the Malakand Field Force, dispatched in the summer of 1897 to deal with unrest on the Northwest Frontier of British India (now part of Pakistan).

It had its origin in a series of despatches written for the London Daily Telegraph and so was really the product of Churchill’s need to earn some money as well as to make a name for himself. Churchill tells the story of the Malakand expedition in which he took part.
